Dear romi,

Just a quick note today to clear something up!

Last week I sent you a link to an article (see the first article in the PS below) by nutrition specialist Mike Geary. He writes about a common food, fructose, that may be bad for our brains over time if we get too much of it.

I received an email question indicating that the article may have created some confusion, as fructose is common in many natural fruits and veggies we eat and use in juicing recipes. Does this mean that we have to avoid everything with fructose?

Not at all, although we have to try to limit our intake, even from natural sources such as fruits.

I think Mike's aim was to create awareness of our artificially high intake of fructose, so often hidden in processed foods, energy drinks and soda pop. Our bodies can easily be bombarded with it if we don't know what to look out for on food labels.

Mike does refer to the fructose in fruits in the article:

"Last thing to note about fructose... Yes, natural whole fruits do contain fructose, but generally contain MUCH smaller quantities of fructose than you would consume in a sweetened juice drink, soft drink or sweetened junk foods. Also, the phytonutrients, antioxidants, and fiber that's contained in most whole fruits counteracts any negative effects of fructose. I personally try to keep fruit intake to no more than 1-2 pieces a day due to the sugar and fructose content of larger amounts of fruit."

According to the University of Virginia Health System these are some of the fruits and vegetables that are on the safer side in terms of fructose:

Bananas, blackberries, blueberries, grapefruit, kiwifruit, grapes, lemons, limes, oranges, papaya, passion fruit, pineapples, raspberries, rhubarb, strawberries, asparagus, cauliflower, broccoli, leafy greens, celery, white potatoes, shallots, spinach and cucumber.

Let's be more fructose-aware this year!
