Protect your family! Choose these vegetables organic to reduce exposure to pesticide residue

Don't miss this! - Rika Susan

    Dear romi,

Are you also concerned about possible pesticide residue in your fruits and vegetables?

Generally speaking, the benefits of our intake of health-building fruits and vegetables far outweigh the risks of possible exposure to pesticides. However, we all want to make sure that we protect ourselves and our families as far as we can.

  • Luckily organizations such as the Environmental Working Group regularly step in to guide us through this maze. Every year they compile a list called the 'EWG's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides'. The guide is based on laboratory tests done by the FDA and the USDA Pesticide Testing Program.

Today I would like to share with you the EWG's latest list of the conventionally grown fruits and vegetables likely to show the highest level of pesticide residue. If at all possible, you should try to buy these from organic produce sources.

    • Apples
    • Celery
    • Cherry tomatoes
    • Cucumbers
    • Grapes
    • Hot peppers
    • Nectarines
    • Peaches
    • Potatoes
    • Spinach
    • Strawberries
    • Sweet bell peppers
    • Kale
    • Summer squash

Now, does this mean that you should rather not eat or juice fruits and vegetables such as strawberries, nectarines or celery?

According to the EWG, this is not at all what they want to see! They stress that the health benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables continue to outweigh the risks of pesticide exposure. The idea is simply to use the EWG's Shopper's Guide to reduce your exposure as much as possible. Eating conventionally grown produce remains far better than not eating fruits and vegetables at all.

So, just keep the above list in mind when choosing between conventional and organic produce. Many of us can't afford to buy everything organic. The EWG lists the most important fruits and veggies to choose from an organic source, if you can.

Next time I will give you the list of the 'cleanest' fruits and veggies. These have been shown to have to lowest pesticide residue levels. Also look out for my tips for washing your fruits and vegetables, which will be in your inbox soon.

That's it for today, folks! Happy juicing!

9 Quick juicing tips to keep your digestion happy + an easy newbie juice recipe

  • 9 Quick Juicing Tips + Recipe for Beginners

  • Don't miss this! - Rika Susan

    Dear romi,

A new juicing friend recently wrote to ask why she was experiencing some digestive issues after starting to juice for the first time.

This is quite a frequent question from folks new to juicing!

So, in this email I would like to give a few quick tips for those of you new to this journey. Actually, the 'old hands' may also want to check these out, especially the reminders in numbers 6 and 8! :-)

It is not unusual for your digestive tract to need some time to get used to juicing. Remember that this is something totally new for your system and the adjustment to it sometimes doesn't come overnight.

Let's get into those 9 quick tips...

    1. The idea is not that you start with something like a juice fast! It is best to introduce juicing slowly, allowing your digestive tract to get used to the juices. Perhaps even juice just once every two days or so to start with. Then daily and some folks juice twice a day.

    2. I recommend working up to 8oz to 16oz (1 - 2 glasses) of juice a day. Although healthy, juices also pack some calories! :-) Enjoy too many juices and you are going to start gaining weight, rather than losing it. It can also affect your blood sugar, particularly if you go heavy on the fruits.

    3. Start with the 'friendliest' veggies, such as carrots, celery and cucumber. You can also add an apple or a pear. That is usually quite safe (see recipe below).

    4. Only start to add greens slowly after a week or two. Just a little at a time, allowing your body to get used to them.

    5. Beets are also very powerful. Add them sparingly at first and rather discard the leaves.

    6. Only add one new veggie at a time, in case something doesn't agree with you. This makes it easier to identify the culprit.

    7. Rather drink your juice half and hour or so before a main meal, than after a heavy meal. I find that it doesn't agree with me if I drink it on a full stomach.

    8. Sip the juice slooowly, in a sense chewing it. That gets the digestive juices flowing and may make it easier to tolerate the juice.

    9. Please don't try wheatgrass until much later - if you want to use it at all! I personally don't like it, as it has such a strong flavor and is extremely potent. It simply doesn't agree with some people.

    Super-Easy Juice!

    4 Carrots
    3 Ribs of celery
    1/3 Medium cucumber
    2 Pears

    Method:
    1. Discard carrot greens
    2. Wash ingredients carefully
    3. Trim carrot ends
    4. Peel cucumber only if waxed, as the skin is rich in nutrients
    5. Quarter pears. Don't peel, but discard seeds
    6. Juice, pour over crushed ice and enjoy!

    Servings:
    1 to 2 Medium

    http://www.best-juicing.com/chicken-vs-beef-slides/

    Click for new slide presentation...

Are you also confused about the whole chicken vs beef debate? Unless you are all about raw food, you may also be under the impression that you need to avoid red meat almost like the plague.

Well, this may not be the case...

You see, grass-fed beef actually may not be so bad for you. In fact, it can even be good for you if you choose the right cuts!

Did you know that it comes loaded with some healthy monounsaturated fats? And that it has a specific substance in it that can help you with all sorts of things like...

    • Burning fat
    • Losing weight
    • Heart health
    • Insulin resistance
    • Your metabolism

Of course it is still about balance. You are not going to eat red meat every single day, are you? Some days beef, then chicken, then fish and even some raw food days thrown in for good measure.

So, check out the presentation at the link below right now! And, if you enjoy it, please like it, tweet it, pin it or share it with friends in any way you can. Let's see if we can't make this one of the top presentations on Slideshare this week! :-)
