(Note: Quick quiz link further down!) Dear romi, We hear and read a lot about detoxing... Is this something you should consider? Generally speaking, I don't believe that our digestive systems need 'detoxing' or 'cleansing' on a regular basis. Provided that we enjoy healthy, wholesome and natural foods, I think our bodies are well-equipped to cope with what we eat. However, it is a fact that millions of people all over the world are struggling with all sorts of frustrating and confounding digestive issues today. Contributing factors include our exposure to antibiotics, stress and too many processed and unnatural foods. Your natural aging process can also be added to this list. Over time this can lead to toxic bacterial imbalances in your gut and common problems such as constipation or bloating. For example, many folks find that they are no longer digesting proteins as easily or effectively. Luckily there is a juicy way to address this specific digestive issue! Enter papaya and pineapple! Papaya is rich in papain, a digestive enzyme that can help you with protein digestion and may clear up constipation. This tropical fruit also is an excellent source of potassium, beta-carotene, calcium, and vitamin C. It may contribute to restoring the bacterial balance in your digestive tract, after you have been on antibiotics. Pineapple is well-known for its bromelain content. Many people know that bromelain has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect. But did you know that it is another of the enzymes that play an important part in protein digestion? Bromelain also eases digestion in general and may help to heal the lining of your digestive tract. It can also be used as a remedy for mild constipation. Here are 2 delicious juice recipes that can help to ease your digestion! (As always, if you have any allergy or ailment, please speak to your doctor first before juicing! You may have to limit your intake of certain fruits and vegetables.)
